Can I take Kaopectate® Anti-Diarrheal products with other medications?

Your healthcare professional knows your medical history best, and you should consult with your healthcare professional before taking Kaopectate® with any other medication.  Because Kaopectate® Anti-Diarrheal products contain salicylates, you should not take it if you are allergic to salicylates (including aspirin) or if you are taking other salicylate products.  Ask a healthcare professional before use if you are taking any medication for thinning the blood, or for diabetes, gout or arthritis.  Please see label for information regarding Reye's syndrome.

How are salicylates associated with allergies and Reye's Syndrome?

Like many other drugs, salicylates may cause an allergic reaction. Allergic reactions to salicylates have been noted in patients with known hypersensitivity to aspirin and related compounds. Reye's syndrome is a rare disease that affects the liver and brain. Reye's syndrome has been associated with salicylate administration during viral illness. Children and teenagers who have or are recovering from chicken pox, flu symptoms or flu should not use this product. If nausea, vomiting or fever occur, consult a healthcare professional because this could be an early sign of Reye's syndrome, a rare but serious illness.

Kaopectate® Anti-Diarrheal caplets contain 99 mg per caplet.   Kaopectate®Anti-Diarrheal extra strength liquid contains 236 mg per 15 mL or 1 tablespoonful.    Kaopectate® Anti-Diarrheal regular strength liquid contains 130 mg per 15 mL or 1 tablespoonful.

Is Kaopectate® Stool Softener a laxative?

No, it is a stool softener, not a laxative.  Unlike a laxative, Kaopectate® Stool Softener contains no harsh stimulants that can upset your stomach or cause cramps. Instead, it works gently by drawing water into the stool making it softer and easier to pass. You can expect to return to regularity in 12-72 hours.

What is salicylate?

Salicylate is a chemical substance that is present in aspirin. It possesses analgesic (pain killing) and anti-inflammatory properties.   Bismuth subsalicylate is related to aspirin.  One cannot take the two products together or take Kaopectate® if allergic to aspirin.
